FAQs

Will my insurance company pay for the PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc?

Dr. Todd Bonvallet
Chattanooga, TN
Different insurance carriers vary with regards to their ability to reimburse for the artificial cervical disc.
Dr. Vincent Traynelis
Iowa City, IA
Insurance policies differ. All patients need to check with their insurance provider to determine coverage for all operations.
Dr. Joseph Stachniak
Plano, TX
Hopefully, yes.
Dr. J. Kenneth Burkus
Columbus, GA
I don't see why this would not be a win-win for the insurance industry, the patients, the hospitals and the surgeons. I think the surgeons can feel safe knowing that it is safe and efficacious.

The procedure itself is no different than the current technology. The study showed less revision surgeries associated with the disc, fewer re-operations, that there were no implant migrations, that there's less pain and an earlier return to work.
Dr. Praveen Mummaneni
San Francisco, CA
Probably yes.
Dr. Richard Fessler
Chicago, IL
We don't know the answer to that question yet. We are working to help the insurance companies understand the benefits of the disc for their patients, so we are hopeful that it will be covered soon.
Dr. Todd Lanman
Los Angeles, CA
Currently we don't know which companies will pay for the artificial discs and which will not. However, the clinical data is very strong and shows that this treatment option works. We believe once the FDA has approved the disc, insurers will cover the procedure.
Dr. Michael Neuwirth
New York, NY
At this point in time, this is a question that needs to be answered. The fact that the FDA will allow the PRESTIGE® Cervical Disc to be marketed as better than the gold standard, specifically anterior cervical fusion, should improve the chances that insurance companies will begin to pay for this procedure. Until that time, we need to focus on a case-by-case basis.
Dr. Paul Broadstone
Chattanooga, TN
The crystal ball doesn't allow a clear answer. The response from insurance companies has been varied and not untypical for a new procedure and technologies. It is an evolutionary process that changes frequently. However, we make sure that the response from them is known before you are admitted to the hospital and that a pre-certification has been received.
Dr. Rick Sasso
Indianapolis, IN
Some may; we've certainly had some that have paid for it.

The commentary above recounts the experiences of these physicians. Medtronic invited them to share their stories candidly. Keep in mind that results vary; not every patient's response is the same. Talk with your doctor to learn more about any products that are mentioned above.

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications and benefits of spinal surgery with your doctor prior to receiving treatment, and that you rely on your doctor's judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
