A plate is necessary for fusion. Typically it does not set off the alarm.

A metal plate is not necessary for fusion; however there are a number of studies that indicate the metal plate may increase the potential for a successful fusion, especially when many areas of the spine are fused. A metal plate also may decrease the amount of time the patient needs to wear a brace or collar after surgery. The hardware used in cervical spine surgery typically does not set off metal detectors.

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications and benefits of spinal surgery with your doctor prior to receiving treatment, and that you rely on your doctor's judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
